If your child has recently received an autism diagnosis or you're still waiting on one, early intervention is one of the most powerful steps you can take right now. At Malone Therapy in Gympie, we work alongside families across the Wide Bay region every day to make that happen.

Why Early Intervention is Important
Early intervention means starting therapy and targeted support during the years a child's brain is developing fastest, typically between ages 0 and 7, with the strongest outcomes when support begins before age 5.
The Australian NDIS evidence review found positive effects on a range of child and family outcomes across behavioural and developmental early interventions, reinforcing the value of tailored, family-centred support (NDIS Data and Evidence, 2024). A 2023 meta-analysis also found that developmental interventions can improve social communication with carers, while naturalistic developmental behavioural interventions can improve core social-communication challenges (Sandbank et al., BMJ, 2023).
For families in Gympie and across the Wide Bay, accessing these services locally matters enormously. You shouldn't have to travel to Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast to get quality ASD early intervention.
What Early Intervention Actually Looks Like
Every child with autism is different, so every program at Malone Therapy is individualised, strengths-based, and play-based where possible. Depending on your child's needs, support may include:
Speech therapy — verbal language, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), and social language
Occupational therapy (OT) — sensory processing, fine motor skills, self-care routines, and school readiness
Social skills development — helping children connect, play, and engage with others
Behavioural support — understanding and responding to challenging behaviours with compassion and practical strategies
Family coaching — giving parents and carers tools to support development every day, not just during sessions

How Early Should We Start?
As soon as possible, and you don't always need to wait for a formal diagnosis. A randomised clinical trial published in JAMA Paediatrics found that pre-emptive intervention in infants showing early signs of autism reduced symptom severity and lowered the odds of an autism diagnosis at age 3 (Camarata et al., 2021).
Don’t wait for all the paperwork to be sorted before reaching out. Whether you’re accessing services through the NDIS or privately, our team can help you understand your options, identify useful assessments, and determine what supports will benefit your child most right now.
Does My Child Need Both Speech Therapy and OT?

Many children with autism benefit from both, because communication and sensory or motor development are deeply connected. A child who struggles with sensory sensitivities may find it harder to focus in conversation. A child with delayed fine motor skills may find it difficult to engage in the play that naturally builds social connection.
At Malone Therapy, our speech therapists and OTs work collaboratively, so your child gets a cohesive, whole-child approach that considers their strengths, challenges, home environment, and goals.
How NDIS Funding Works for ASD Early Intervention
Early intervention is considered a reasonable and necessary support under the NDIS. There are different eligibility pathways depending on your child’s age. For guidance on accessing the NDIS, including early childhood supports, you can contact Bush Kids as the NDIS Early Childhood Partner in our region.
Children under 6 can access early supports based on developmental delay, so a formal diagnosis is not always required. If a paediatrician or allied health professional has identified concerns in areas such as communication, self‑care, motor skills, or social development; this is often enough to start the NDIS early childhood process.
Children under 6 years with a formal diagnosis – such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Down syndrome, cerebral palsy or other developmental conditions – may also be eligible for NDIS‑funded supports, depending on how their condition affects everyday functioning and what is included in their individual NDIS plan.
Children aged 6 to under 9 need evidence of a disability that is permanent and substantially impacts daily functioning. A specialist diagnostic report is generally required.
Both groups must meet standard NDIS residency requirements (Australian citizenship, a permanent visa, or a Protected Special Category Visa).

Support for the Whole Family

Early intervention works best when the whole family is included. Parents and carers are a child's most important teachers, and what happens between therapy sessions matters just as much as what happens during them.
We provide parent coaching and family guidance as part of every ASD early intervention program . Things we help with include understanding your child's sensory profile, practical communication strategies for home, or simply a space to ask questions without judgement.
Raising a child with autism can be joyful, exhausting, and everything in between. We get that, and we're here for all of it.
FAQ
What age should a child with autism start early intervention?
As early as possible, ideally before age 5, but children of any age can benefit. If your child is under 6, they may be eligible for NDIS support even without a confirmed diagnosis.
Do I need an autism diagnosis to access services at Malone Therapy?
No. Under the NDIS Early Childhood Approach, children showing developmental differences may access support before a formal diagnosis. Contact our Gympie team to talk through your child's situation.
Is early intervention for autism covered by the NDIS?
Yes. Early intervention is a reasonable and necessary support under the NDIS. Malone Therapy is a registered provider, and most of our ASD services are NDIS-funded. We can help you understand your current plan or prepare for a plan review.
What is the difference between speech therapy and OT for a child with autism?
Speech therapy focuses on communication and social interaction. OT focuses on daily functioning — sensory processing, fine motor skills, and independence. Many children benefit from both, and our Gympie team delivers coordinated care across both disciplines.
