HOW CAN OUR EQUINE
THERAPY TEAM HELP?

Equine Therapy

At Malone Therapy our equine-assisted OT sessions are run by our amazing therapy assistant who is also a qualified horse-riding instructor.  As with all of our therapy assistant sessions, they are overseen by registered therapists, in this case by our occupational therapists.  Some of the goals we work on in equine-assisted OT include:

1. Emotional Regulation

  • Interacting with horses can help individuals learn to manage and regulate their emotions. The presence of horses often creates a calming effect, which can be particularly beneficial for people dealing with anxiety, depression, or trauma.

2. Social Skills

  • Working with horses can improve social skills such as communication, empathy, and trust. Since horses are highly sensitive to non-verbal cues, individuals must learn to communicate effectively and develop a deeper understanding of non-verbal communication, which can translate into improved interpersonal relationships.

3. Confidence Building

  • Achieving tasks and building relationships with horses can boost self-confidence and self-esteem. As individuals learn to overcome challenges and develop a sense of accomplishment in their interactions with horses, they often gain confidence in other areas of their lives as well.

4. Stress Reduction

  • Spending time in nature and engaging in activities with horses can reduce stress levels. The rhythmic motion of horseback riding, coupled with the calming presence of the animals, can promote relaxation and alleviate stress.

5. Physical Benefits

  • Horseback riding itself offers physical benefits such as improved balance, coordination, and core strength. Additionally, caring for and grooming horses can provide opportunities for physical activity and exercise.

6. Therapeutic Bond

  • The bond formed between individuals and horses can be therapeutic in itself. Horses are non-judgmental and responsive animals, which can create a safe space for individuals to express themselves and work through emotional issues.

7. Motivation

  • For individuals undergoing therapy for various mental health issues or behavioural challenges, the unique and engaging nature of equine therapy can increase motivation and commitment to engaging in the outside world.
